If you are ordering DIY plantation shutters online then look out for the following...

UPVC windows have large handles that can stop the louvre blades moving up and down.

Many customers imagine that the shutter frames fit sideways into the wall.

They are actually designed to fix onto the window frame.

You will need to measure how far your handle protrudes, then go to my advice on shutters page to choose which size batten will be suitable to space your shutter frame away from the window to stop the handles hitting the louvre blades.

Fit the battens first, then fit your shutter frame onto the battens.

For personal advice on your window handles register an account online and I will call you personally to talk you through how to deal with your handles.  You can also upload photos to your account for specific advice, and so that I can see your windows, making it easier to discuss your plantation shutters, as if I was in the room with you.

What are shutters made from?

Are you confused about all the different materials and types of wooden plantation shutters available for fitted or self assembly DIY?

It's simple...

You don't need to worry, on my website I have selected the two most common and best suited materials for you, Paulownia and MDF named Elite and Standard.

MDF DIY Shutters

In America and the UK, 75% of plantation shutter sales are MDF. This is why our 'Standard' (MDF) forms our best selling product online. It's cheap yet looks great and can be fitted anywhere. You will find it hard to tell the difference.

Wooden DIY Shutters and solid shutters

In the past, plantation shutters have been made from Hemlock and Poplar (Tulip wood). The best plantation shutters are made from Basswood, these are wooden and provide a choice of both stained and painted shutters. Basswood plantation shutters are very attractive as they boast a lovely grain structure which some other materials lack.  Elite shutters are light weight, so for larger plantation shutters where the weight of the shutter may be an issue this is an ideal solution.

London based or other companies who can't supply Basswood or MDF shutters choose alternative materials but these fail to have the same qualities.

Specialist Shutter Materials - ABS Plastic and Cedar Shutters

I also now offer an ABS plantation shutter, which is has a wooden core and is then coated in ABS plastic.  They are very hardwearing plastic shutters and are ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, playrooms, hotels or sea-front properties, or anywhere that they may be in frequent use or need to be easily cleaned.

I can also supply cedar shutters, although not widely available advertised on my website they are still an option when you come to order.  Or why not give me a call or send me a message if you can’t find the wood or stained shutter that you were looking for?

Like two kids at Christmas...

Like two kids at Christmas - that's the only way I could describe the reaction of my partner and I when we noticed the delivery van carrying our new opennshut.co.uk shutters arrive at our front door.

Having liaised with company owner Sam Dunster, we had expected the arrival of our shutters that morning, and were not disappointed.

Just as promised, several labelled boxes were loaded off the van, each giving a clear description of the goodies that lurked inside.

A quick check of the product boxes later, and my partner
(a photographer by profession, but also carving himself a career in professional DIY!) was raring to go. He had already read up on the easy-to-follow instructions which are downloadable from the website, so had a good idea on what lay in store.

He started, as suggested, by pairing up the boxes so we knew which parts were intended for each window. I watched with anticipation as he unpacked the first - my excitement had reached crescendo levels as I surveyed the beautifully crafted shutters.

They were just as I expected, having lingered on Sam's website for hours a few weeks earlier to ensure we were making the right choice.

We had chosen satin white craftwood shutters to bounce sunlight into the room and to give our recessed bay window maximum impact. They were intended as one of the main features in our minimalist living room.

The high level of the craftsmanship was immediately visible - it was an agonising wait for delivery, but it just goes to prove how inundated with business Sam and his team are, and how dedicated to quality they are that the shutters aren't immediately available.

Though it was well worth the wait.

The finished effect gives the room a traditional yet contemporary twist. No fuss, no fabric, just sheer indulgence.

DIY Interior Shutters - Stylish

Interior window shutters, also known as plantation or louvre shutters, provide a stylish alternative to window blinds and curtains. There are several advantages to having interior shutters, the main ones being that they allow you to control privacy and light. In addition to blinds allowing all-over tilting, they allow the tilting of individual sections of louvres to suit personal preferences.
Interior shutters add atmosphere to any room, giving desired light and a designer look, as well as a good sense of security since they are an excellent deterrent. There's no doubt they provide you with much needed peace of mind.  The very sight of shutters will be an unwanted hurdle for any would be burglar.

Window Shutters - Cost-effective

Whether you choose MDF or Basswood shutters, as professionally fitted or DIY Interior Shutters, or if you prefer to call them Plantation or Window Shutters, they will be a cost-effective solution to your home improvement. In olden times homes had wooden shutters in addition to curtains as they found shutters and in particular Solid shutters are excellent for insulation.

Interior Shutters - Touch of Class
 
Wooden Shutters provide a touch of class to any home. Shutters are available in several styles. From full height where the shutters are the full height of your window, half height also called Cafe style, where the shutters cover just the bottom half of the window and top opening, often called tier-on-tier, where you have two levels of shutters, one above the other allowing you the option to open the top section and the bottom independent of each other to suit personal preferences of use.

Specialist Shutters:

• Blackout Shutters - New and Practical

We now provide blackout shutters. These are interior window shutters with a blackout blind positioned within the frame construction providing the benefits of interior shutters that of a standard white colored blackout blind for extra protection from light. Ideal for the bedroom and nursery.

• Solid Shutters

In addition to the above main styles of window shutters there are solid shutters.  Solid shutters are like the Victorian basic wooden panels of shaped wood, hinged to fold to one side or completely cover the window when shut.  These are also known as Shaker style shutters. The options for bespoke specially shaped shutters including circle, triangular and arched to suit every shape of window, via request we shape the shutters to exactly match the shape of your specific window.

• Cedar Shutters

Made from solid cedar, Cedar Shutters offer a beautiful finish as they can be stained or oiled.  They are light-weight so ideal for large shutters, and are perfect if you prefer a natural looking shutter.  Both plantation shutters, solid shutter, shapes and arches are available in Cedar.  The remote control option can also be added to Cedar shutters.

• Plastic Shutters – New and More Durable

Plastic shutters, also called ABS shutters, are ideal for rooms that may be damp such as the kitchen and bathroom.  They are hardwearing and can be wiped-down.  They look the same as other plantation shutters once fitted, so match other shutters supplied as they have a high quality finish, but are designed to be more durable.  Plastic plantation shutters are ideal for rooms where they may need to be cleaned easily or withstand higher temperatures and moisture levels.

• Remote Control Shutters – New for ‘Difficult to Reach Windows’

Ideal for windows that are not within easy reach, such as over stairs or in a large property, remote control plantation shutters allow you alter the louver position of your shutters from one small remote control.  The remote control shutters are also great for those who just want to be able to alter the louver position without having to leave the comfort of the sofa or their bed!  The remote control shutter allows you to alter the louvre position and adjust the amount of light entering your home without having to reach the shutter itself, and has a series of pre-set louvre positions.  Shutters can be programmed to all operate from one remote in each room.  

Shuttermatch Blinds – New to Match Your Shutters

I now offer a woodslat blind in the same finish as your plantation shutters so that you can perfectly match your shutters if you prefer to have a blind in one of your rooms.  The blinds are of a very high quality, with smooth operation and a tight slat closure.
